How to Keep Teeth Protected Against Acidic Foods and Beverages

Posted on 8/23/2021 by Giri Palani
How to Keep Teeth Protected Against Acidic Foods and BeveragesAcidic foods and beverages can harm your teeth. Specifically, they attack the enamel of your teeth. The enamel is the protective coating on the outside of your tooth. It is highly susceptible to sugar and acidic foods. These antagonists weaken the enamel and open the door for tooth decay. It is important to keep your teeth protected.

Ways to Protect Your Teeth

First, it is important to know which foods and beverages are highly acidic. If you are not sure what is considered acidic, you can look up the pH level of the food or beverage. If the item has a low pH level, between one and three, this food or beverage is considered highly acidic. Foods and beverages in this category may accelerate the thinning of your enamel.

Lemons, grapefruit, strawberries, grapes, and apples are highly acidic. In fact, many fruits are high in acidity. Choose a varied diet and consume these fruits in moderation. If you have sensitivity in your mouth already, you may choose to totally avoid these foods. If you're going to drink fruit juice, or soda, consider using a straw. The straw will help to bypass any contact with your teeth.

Wine can also be acidic, although red wine tends to be less acidic than white wine. Berries and tomato- based products are also acidic. If you're going to consume these foods or drinks, rinse your mouth with water after you consume them. Also, if you eat acidic foods, chew them slowly. This will stimulate your saliva production which also helps to wash the acids off your teeth.
